WORDS
The core of the Quill initiative is words. Written words that lead to God, and that bring the reader into his presence. Words that reach out and that encourage and inspire the reader, wether you are a person of faith or not.
Spoken, heard or read, words wield immense power. They can bring life or destroy it and so much more in-between. In short, words are one of the most powerful entities in the universe. God created the universe and everything in it, and on it, with the words “let there be….” and there was. He spoke, it happened. That simple.
God values words, he is The Word. Johns gospel puts it this way - in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God. Words are treasures.
The Quill is a personal reminder, for everyone, that words require wisdom and an understanding of how to use them because their intentions will influence those who read and hear them. Spoken words, along with how they’re spoken, immediately let those who hear them know the character of the speaker. This also applies to written words. That alone is a call for wisdom and understanding. However, when paired with the realisation that words always, intentionally or unintentionally lead somewhere, make it a call to action. That call is writing and speaking with a Kingdom attitude and intent. With consideration and wisdom. Your words express your character and your relationship with God. They will lead people to him or away from him. They will encourage them or condemn them.
So how does this outwork without stressing about every word you think, write or speak?
Think of yourself, your life, as a book, a collection of letters and stories that people can read, all the time. When people interact with you what would your letters and stories say?
Getting a perspective
The essence of this Quill exercise is to explore and discover, NOT an avenue to criticise or condemn yourself or craft a politically correct, churchy worded narrative. Ok? Remember this,
“You are a word of God, written only once”.
Peggy Daley
Write yourself a “Dear Me” letter, an honest narrative of who you are and maybe why you’re like that. Then write God a honest letter, talking about what’s important to you, your passions, things that you’re drawn to and not drawn to, maybe even things you don’t understand. If you speak more than one language, use them all. Don’t re-read them, no matter how tempted you are.
Put them in separate envelopes and leave them for three days. On the fourth day open them both and read them. Consider them. The words you used, how you’ve used them, the ones that you use repeatedly, your style of writing and anything else you notice.
You will begin to get an insight into how people read you as a person. This has to be an exploration, an insight an adventure into seeing yourself was you possible haven’t before. You’ll find you will make changes, be surprised and motivated towards a greater understanding of life and living
Having gained insight and perspective, put them into action. Speak for good, speak to inspire, speak with wisdom and respect, speak life; write life, motivation, gratitude and thanks. The button below will take you to two challenges you can do with friends or do alone. Both challenges involve the use of Quill postcards and Quill letters…..
