Dwell

What do you think of when you read ‘dwell’? It’s not a word we commonly use. We’re probably more familiar with ‘dwelling’ and think of a house or a type of place to live in.

Dwell in ancient Hebrew was a common word, actually a common nine words! The most used were ‘yashabh’ to sit down, inhabit and remain and ‘shakan’ to settle down, that which dwells, and the presence of God (‘shekhina’).

In Ancient Greek, used in the New Testament, ‘okieo’ to inhabit, to abide is commonly used as is ‘enokieo’ to dwell in, to direct attention to and is often used for the indwelling of the Spirit of God in a believer.

Dwell, for today’s believers, is a concept in our relationship with God. It’s a call to live in constant awareness of his presence. To cultivate a Kingdom life and relationship with the Spirit of God that anticipates a future and a hope. Dwell is an encouragement to live a life that reflects the reality of the indwelling of the Spirit in us and the overflow that it brings.

There are over 13 different words and 400 references to ‘dwell’ through the bible. Over the coming months we’re going to explore this concept of Dwell and its meaning for our lives.
