No going back
Freedom. There is a profound simplicity about it, but our world today makes it complex with the infinite pressures and alternatives and considerations it throws at us. So, how do we recognise things that make us try and go the wrong way down a one way street? Paul gives us some insights. His advice is to let the Spirit of God guide your life. But he’s aware it’s just not easy because we live in a world where sin flourishes and where compromise is made to sound like forward thinking wisdom. He’s also aware that there are two opposite forces working in and around us and he makes an observation in which there is a key to overcoming this struggle between Freedom and slavery in Galatians 5:16,17 msg
“ ..Live freely, animated and motivated by God’s Spirit. Then you won’t feed the compulsions of selfishness. For there is a root of sinful self-interest in us that is at odds with a free spirit, just as the free spirit is incompatible with selfishness. These two ways of life are contrary to each other, so that you cannot live at times one way and at times another way according to how you feel on any given day”
Then he drops the key to successful Freedom in verse 18
“Why don’t you choose to be led by the Spirit and so escape the erratic compulsions of a law-dominated existence?.”
What does that mean? When you choose to be guided by and led by the Spirit you don’t answer to the old things that dictated your life, you are free from them all. they’re behind you. You’re now on the road of freedom, free to learn to live differently, to explore and experience everything differently. A new context to live from, new perspective to see from, hear differently, to understand differently, to believe differently. Free to believe things have changed and can continue to change.
Free to love differently and be loved differently.
