Fresh Oil & Fire

The bible is an incredible book, not only for the way it’s written and the things it talks about but for how the Old Testament lays a foundation for the actions of living faith in the New Testament. I never tire of exploring its pages, ready for fresh insight and perspectives I haven’t yet encountered. Oil and Fire are a significant part of that exploration.

Oil in the Old Testament was used widely in everyday life and had serious significance in the spiritual life of its people. Anointing, the pouring on or smearing over a person, signified a giving of power by God to achieve a specific task assigned to them by him. Divine favour to accomplish the task, mission, purpose.

In the New Testament oil still holds all this, but adds a new dimension. It becomes more personal, a transforming power in an individual in the form of the Spirit of God. In both they signify consecration, refining, dedication and most of all Gods presence.

Oil in a vessel or on a vessel (person) does nothing on its own. Oil is the fuel and fuel needs igniting, to light and to burn. Heated to produce energy, to bring out the smell incense and the spices it contains. Oil needs Fire. The fire of the Spirit of God igniting the saturation that oil of the Spirit brings.

In the Old Testament we see it showing the presence of God. Moses and the bush that was on fire but didn’t burn in Exodus 3 nlt. The pillar of fire seen at night in Exodus 13 nltby the people of Israel. God descending on Mt Sinai as fire Exodus 19 nlt. In the New Testament we see it as tongues of fire at Pentecost that ignited a momentum and passion to preach Jesus and the miracles that followed in Acts 2. And the releasing of the fruit and gifts of the Holy Spirit that comes with this igniting. The personal presence of God that comes when you have a relationship with him.

Oil indwells, it empowers understanding, the getting of wisdom and revelation of purpose. Fire gives momentum and ignites passion for God. Both are and do so much more. Take some time with God refresh your Oil and Fire. Make fresh connection with the Spirit of God that empowers and ignites in a way you havent yet experienced.
