Light & Truth
Luke 8:16-18
‘No one lights a lamp and then covers it with a bowl, or hides it under a bed. A lamp is placed on a stand, where its light can be seen by all who enter the house. For all that is secret will eventually be brought into the open, and everything that is concealed will be brought into light and be made known to all.
So pay attention to how you hear. To those who listen to my teaching, more understanding will be given. But for those who are not listening, even what they think they understand will be taken away from them’.
Who would get a great lamp, plug it in and then cover it up or put it under a bed to illuminate the dust bunnies? What would be the point. A great lamp needs to be put where everyone who visits the house can see its light. Why else would you buy it?
It’s stating the really obvious, but in the context of Luke recording one of Jesus’ parables, what does it mean? The light in this parable is referring to The Truth, to himself.
In John 14:6 Jesus says he is The Way, The Truth, The Light.
The light will shine on the darkness and expose its contents to everyone. It conquers darkness and triumphs over its lies. There’s no point hiding from the truth.
Gods’ truth is not the same as the worlds truth, which changes constantly depending on circumstances, people, events, or what the speaker of it wants others to believe. The truth Jesus is talking about is constant, unchanging and unwavering. He’s asking us to pay attention, focus and hear the Truth in his teaching, his words, not through our filters or interpretations. If we can do that we will get understanding, grasp the truth of what he is saying.

Listening isn’t always Hearing in Table Conversations.
